A vocabulary lesson & quiz for the parents!


Auditory Learner - a child who learns best by listening to and discussing lessons.

Boxed Curriculum – a complete, organized curriculum program that contains detailed instructions and require little to no extra materials.

Burnout - a parent or family that is (or is on the brink of) quitting homeschooling due to exhaustion, lack of support or lingering fears.

Car Schooling - structured learning activities that can be done while on roadtrips or long drives. Car schooling can be a primary home schooling methodology or a supplement for those times when an abundance of time is being spent driving.

Charlotte Mason Education – an education philosophy developed by Charlotte Mason, a 19th century educator, that believed that education should center on classical literature, great works of art and the environment. A Charlotte Mason Education is a self-directed education that focuses on observation, reflection and self-expression. 

Charter Schools - public schools that are independent of the local school board and that operate under contract with the state government.

Classical Education – an education philosophy based off of ancient greek teaching styles. Education is divided into three stages. Early education focuses on memorization of facts and the "building blocks" of education. Middle School progresses to logic or "why" and high school focuses on self-expression and the ability think for oneself. 

Compulsory Attendance – refers to the ages during which the state requires students to receive formal education.

Cooperative Teaching (Co-Opting) – a cooperative agreement within a homeschool organization where one parent agrees to teach a class on a topic they are knowledgeable about, usually with the understanding that other parents will teach classes as well.

Core Academic Subjects - The subjects that all students are expected to learn in preparation for adult life. In Michigan, these subjects include English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. For Michigan homeschoolers reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing and English grammar are required.

Curriculum – educational materials: text books, lesson plans, videos, tests, worksheets, experiments, lab sheets, software, etc. Usually curriculum refers to the entirity of the educational materials used to teach a subject or course.

Curriculum Map – usually (but not always) a visual representation of how different subject material relates across different subjects or grade levels. 

Cyber Schools – online schools. May be public, charter, private or "home schools".
